Tom Mustin:

Why is it important to have an attorney who's experienced in juvenile justice when a young person is arrested? we ask attorney Michelle Martin in this Ask the Lawyers Quick Question.

Michelle Martin:

There is a wide spectrum to the Juvenile Justice System, and they have a lot of resources available to them to avoid the School to Prison Pipeline, so what you wanna do with juveniles, if they are falling into the wrong hands, or getting off track, you wanna put 'em back on track. The Juvenile Justice System is supposed to correct the behavior, not necessarily punish the kids. These are kids and young folks who haven't even had an opportunity to fully develop yet, so you don't want to stifle their growth instead you wanna just put them on the right path. So if you get the correct attorney, then they know how to put the right people in the right places to avoid punishment, but instead just redirect the behavior.
