This video features George E. McLaughlin, a Personal Injury attorney based in Colorado.
Rob Rosenthal:
What's the issue with the Wright Medical Profemur Replacement Hips? We ask Colorado attorney George McLaughlin for this AskTheLawyers™ Quick Question.
George McLaughlin:
Well, I've been doing cases against Wright Medical Technology for about 10 years now, and this is the Profemur Hip Stem—that's the brand name, the Profemur. And the head on it is called the Conserve Head; they're all made by Wright Medical Technology. But this is a modular hip system, modular being it comes in pieces, and during surgery, the surgeon puts it together. This piece here is called the Modular Neck.
Wright Medical for a number of years made this modular neck out of titanium, and they had a problem with the naturally breaking net fractures after some number of years from a process called micro-motion and fretting corrosion. When it breaks, it's just like your leg broke. Suddenly your femur or thigh bone is disconnected from the hip joint, the patient falls to the ground, usually in severe pain, and needs emergency surgery.
