This video features Mark Choate, a Criminal Law attorney based in Alaska.
Rob Rosenthal:
What are some of the more common ways people can sustain a brain injury? We ask Alaska attorney Mark Choate for this AskTheLawyers™ Quick Question.
Mark Choate:
Brain injuries can occur whenever there's either a blow to the head, like somebody actually hits you in the head with something, or when you strike your head, for example, if you fall on the sidewalk and your head hits first, but it also can occur when the head moves quickly and stops. Remember, the brain is this like jello that's sitting inside the skull, and when the skull moves and the skull stops, the brain continues to move forward, and so it can strike the skull here and then it can bounce back and actually strike the skull behind; that's called a coup-contrecoup injury, and you can have injury on both sides of the brain there.
