Leslie Rhode:
What is the most common type of accident bicyclists should look out for? We ask San Francisco attorney Claude Wyle in this AskTheLawyers™ Quick Question.
Claude Wyle:
When I've talked to bicycles, and I talk to them all the time every day, the most common fear is getting struck from behind, right? You're not looking behind, you’re as far right as you can be, and the biggest fear that bicyclists have is getting hit from behind, but in our practice of many, many years representing bicyclists , the most common cause of any bicycle collision involving a motor vehicle is when the motor vehicle turns left in front of the bicyclist or right into the bicyclist. I have a theory that when people are making a left turn, they're looking for what kind of vehicle might hurt my car or hurt me. If a truck is coming, if a bus is coming, if another car is coming, maybe even a motorcycle is coming, sometimes people don't register that as a danger.
