Three members of a motorcycle club were killed and four were injured when struck by an allegedly drunk driver.

The motorcycle club called the Thin Blue Line Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club consisted of active duty, retired, and reserve law enforcement officers from a variety of agencies and jurisdictions. While riding on the highway, a driver that appeared to be drunk crossed the median and struck the motorcyclists head on.

Motorcyclists are particularly at risk of being struck by motor vehicles, especially when a driver is operating their vehicle while impaired. Due to the smaller size of motorcycles, they are often harder to see if a driver does not thoroughly check their blindspots and remain aware at all times. It is imperative that drivers take extra caution when sharing the road with one or more motorcycles.

Drivers need to remain actively aware of motorcyclists at all times, and never drive distracted or under the influence.

Drivers of motor vehicles have a responsibility to motorcyclists, cyclists, pedestrians, and other vehicles around them to follow all traffic safety laws and avoid risky behavior. Driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and even driving while distracted, can result in catastrophic situations for everyone involved. Additionally, drivers who operate their vehicle negligently can face severe fines and even imprisonment depending on the consequences. The driver in this situation has been charged with three counts of intoxication manslaughter and six counts of intoxication assault. This tragic event serves as a reminder to all drivers to make safe and responsible choices whenever they are behind the wheel.

Three members of a law enforcement motorcycle club were killed and four others were critically injured in a collision with an alleged drunk driver. The crash occurred on Highway 16 south of Kerrville, Texas, in mid-July.

The motorcyclists were part of the Thin Blue Line Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club, and they were returning from an anniversary lunch when a car crossed the median and hit the riders head-on. The club describes itself as a group of "active duty, retired, or reserve law enforcement officers from a variety of agencies and jurisdictions".

Jonathan Garza is a personal injury attorney and one of the managing attorneys with the Herrman & Herrman law firm, which has offices in Corpus Christi, San Antonio, and the Rio Grande Valley. Garza says that motorcycle riders face an increased amount of risk from negligent drivers. He says:

“We all have a responsibility to make safe choices when operating a motor vehicle. Choosing to look at your phone, ignore traffic laws, or drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol are all considered to be negligent choices.”

He goes on to say:

“All drivers need to keep an extra eye out for motorcyclists, especially during the summer. Take a second look before you turn or change lanes to make sure there are no motorcycles in your blind spot. Vehicle collisions are often devastating for motorcycle riders.”

The driver was charged with three counts of intoxication manslaughter and six counts of intoxication assault.
