A Fearless Advocate For Your Rights

Video transcript:

Frank Walker:

It's an awesome responsibility to get the call in the middle of the night from a mother or father wanting you to represent their son or daughter.

I'd like to say I was born to be a lawyer, but that'd be a lie. I grew up wanting to play football, basketball. Like every other kid, you want to be an athlete. Winning and losing in sports, it's the same thing in the practice of law. The main thing your clients want to know is that you're fighting for them. It is a challenge. That's the way you get better. You don't get better by not fighting; you don't get better sitting in an office doing contracts. I mean more power to the people who do that, but if you want to be a trial lawyer and criminal defense lawyer, you want to get better. You need to go to court and you need to fight. You need to be in the trenches fighting on a daily basis.

The issue is the willingness to listen. Can you really listen with an understanding here, not just trying to respond, but can you listen to understand what the person's trying to say and how you can best represent your client or how you can best represent the commonwealth or the state, whoever you're trying to represent. If you're willing to listen, you'll learn so much from other people and you’ll learn from the mistakes of other people also. I think that's the most important thing.
