Bisnar Chase, a personal injury law firm based in Newport Beach, recently recovered $11 million in a jury verdict stemming from a wrongful death case filed against two residential treatment facilities. The victim, 58-year-old John Cunningham, took his own life after the treatment centers failed to properly treat prescription drug addiction.
The two rehab centers followed the program Narconon, a Scientology organization promoting the theories of founder L. Ron Hubbard regarding substance abuse treatment and addiction.
Brian Chase, managing partner at Bisnar Chase, said: “I think it is outrageous that a facility where we place our trust and confidence to help and protect a loved one can be so callous and completely neglect and ignore the needs of that family member and patient to the point that they are free to commit suicide. Thankfully, the jury agreed and sent a loud and clear message that our society will not tolerate this kind of behavior.”
In the end, jurors sided with Cunningham’s wife and daughter, deciding that the Scientology-based rehab centers were negligent and failed to provide proper treatment to Cunningham. The attorneys with Bisnar Chase hope that the $11 million verdict will send a message to other residential treatment facilities that they will be held accountable for negligence in the treatment of their patients.
