New York Immigration Lawyer Helps People Facing Deportation

Video Transcript:

Rob Rosenthal:

If someone is facing deportation from the US, what are the immediate steps they should take? Let's ask New York City lawyer Cory Forman for this Ask The Lawyers Quick Question.

Cory Forman:

You always... Consult with a lawyer. It's the most important thing. There's a lot of complicated issues and a lot of complicated questions that need to be answered, in terms of strategy alone, how do you deal with the case, do you wanna defend against removability, are you eligible for relief from removability, is it a case that will subject someone to mandatory detention... There's a lot of questions in there, and many which could be answered early and at least give you that path, provide a strategic path in handling your case, but do not go to court alone, but definitely show up to court. Unfortunately, we have a lot of people that come in here that have deportation orders against them because a friend or a friend of a friend told them not to go to a court hearing because all that's gonna happen is they're gonna get detained and put on a plane. That's not how it works. The worst thing you can do is not show up to court.
