Do you know what to do if you're hit by an uninsured driver in the state of Virginia? We're going to ask Virginia lawyer Greg Webb for this Ask the Lawyers Quick Question.

Greg Webb:

So uninsured drivers unfortunately are out there, too many of them, and luckily, a lot of people don't know this, you have your own insurance that will help you, and that's why we buy insurance to cover us for things that are unforeseen, and one of those unforeseen things is when a driver is out there who failed to purchase insurance, so you look to your own coverage and you have purchased a lot of times unbeknownst to you, uninsured or under-insured motorist coverage, that will pick up for that uninsured motorist who injured you. So it's a simple matter of looking at your policy and looking to see what you've purchased, but there will almost always be under-insured and uninsured motorist coverage equal to the liability coverage that you purchased with your auto policy.
