Everyone has legal rights, regardless of your immigration status.

No matter what your immigration status is, you are entitled to seek justice if someone has wronged you. This applies to employment law, family law, and personal injury law.

In fact, it is illegal for an attorney to ask you about your citizenship status as part of a lawsuit. No matter what type of claim you are thinking about filing, you can trust that your meeting with an attorney will stay 100 percent confidential.

People will try to use your immigration status to intimidate you. Don’t let them.

Unfortunately, it is very common for people to use a victim’s immigration status against them. They may assume that you will be too afraid to fight back due to the potential consequences.

Don’t let them take advantage of you. Stand up for your legal rights.

Absolutely not in Washington state. In fact, there is a prohibition against any lawyer asking about a person's immigration status or citizenship as part of a legal lawsuit. So if they're afraid, it's a normal fear and I get that. But they shouldn't be afraid. The law protects them. The law protects their immigration status, or lack of status. In fact, there is currently a resolution among the superior court judges to expand that so that immigration authorities cannot even come within 500 feet of the courthouse. Because one thing that is happening, and this is certainly legitimate, is that immigration authorities are arresting people when they go to court, and that's just wrong. And so the judges have actually taken a stand and said that the courthouse is a safe place for people. We should be able to have witnesses come in. We should be able to have litigants come in. You shouldn't be intimidated by pursuing justice because of your immigration status.
