Are Juul pods safe?

There are two critical problems with Juul products: the high levels of nicotine, and the health hazards posed by the flavoring. Studies have shown that Juul users are largely unaware of the nicotine they are consuming, and that Juul’s flavoring and advertising have led to extraordinarily high rates of e-cigarette use among young people in addition to physical injuries caused by the flavorings themselves.

This Quick Question features Wayne Parsons, a personal injury attorney with Wayne Parsons Law Office in Honolulu, Hawaiʻi. In this video, he explains how Juul products present critical health problems to their users.

The heated liquid in Juul products provides unheard levels of nicotine to users.

While Juul has solved the former problem of older cigarettes which used to burn the throat with their intense heat, the new method of nicotine delivery to the system is resulting in higher levels of nicotine being introduced to the body than ever before.

In fact, Juul’s nicotine content is one of the highest even among other e-cigarettes on the market. According to the Truth Initiative, one Juul pod contains 20 cigarettes worth of nicotine. Unlike some other e-cigarette products, Juul products always contain nicotine, unlike other similar products which allow users the choice to vape only flavoring and water vapor.

According to a Truth Initiative study, two-thirds of Juul users between the age of 15 and 24 years old were unaware of the nicotine they were taking into their bodies. This has resulted in high levels of nicotine injuries and addiction, especially in young people.

The flavors Juul offers can actually damage the lungs and throat.

The new, higher levels of nicotine in these products are not the only risks Juul products pose. The many flavors offered by Juul can be just as harmful, proven to cause damage to a person’s lungs, throat, and even resulting in life-threatening injuries. The added hazard of the many flavors offered is their attractive quality to youths.

This product has been extremely influential in the sharp rise this country has seen in the use of e-cigarettes among young people. The fun new flavors offered by Juul have been largely to blame for more youths using these products than ever before. While Juul claims they do not market their products to young people, their advertising has on more than one occasion been found contradictory.

If you or your child were harmed by a Juul product, seek legal counsel from a product liability attorney to learn what kind of compensation you could be eligible for. The majority of lawyers who handle these cases offer free consultations and work on contingency, which means you won’t pay unless they win.

I'm Leslie Rhode with AskTheLawyers.com. What is the problem with Juul products? We spoke to Honolulu attorney Wayne Parsons, and he said:

Wayne Parsons:

E-cigarettes, and Juul in particular, uses a liquid that is heated and inhaled. That liquid gives the person inhaling it one of the highest doses of nicotine that anyone could ever get. In the 1940s and 50s, the problem with cigarettes was that they burned the throat. Juul eliminates that problem. It doesn't attack the throat and so a person inhaling this liquid that's been vaporized can take a lot more of it. They also have flavors.

And so you've got a double problem here. You've got nicotine at unheard-of levels and flavors that are gonna be threatening to your lungs and your throat and cause potentially serious and life-threatening injuries. That's the problem with Juul.
