Traumatic brain injuries (TBI) occur when external forces to the head result in the trauma of the brain forcefully colliding with the skull. Even minor TBIs, known as concussions, can lead to devastating and lifelong injuries. Physical damage caused by TBI may include permanent vegetative state, coma, or death, additional emotional and behavioral problems for those who survive.

What You Need to Know About TBI

According to the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), roughly 1.4 million people in the United States will suffer a TBI this year. Of those, approximately 50,000 will  die, while 85,000 will suffer long-term disabilities. The remainder will be better off, but may still face lifelong complications resulting from their injuries.

More than 5.3 million Americans are living with TBI-related disabilities in the United States. These disabilities range in severity from “mild” (a brief change in mental status or consciousness) to “severe” (an extended period of unconsciousness or memory loss after the injury).  Most TBIs that occur each year are mild, commonly referred to as concussions. And, while a TBI can happen to anyone, males are at greatest risk in every age group.

In the past few decades, neurologists and other researchers have unlocked many of the secrets of brain injury, most notably, perhaps, that the brain is much more vulnerable to injury than previously assumed.

  • Collecting the appropriate insurance coverage for your injury claim.
