Powerful, Controversial Pain Killer Gets FDA Approval

Lawmakers in Massachusetts have blocked sales of Zogenix’s controversial painkiller Zohydro.

According to Reuters, the drug has been plagued with controversy, as some advocates say that it could lead to a wave of opioid abuse among users. The drug is part of a powerful class of painkillers.

The drug is an extended-release form of hydrocodone that does not contain acetaminophen. If the drug is linked to complications following its release nationally, Zogenix should be held liable.

Last year, a Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advisory panel expressed concerns about the potential for abuse relating to the drug.
