What Happened in the Crash?

The accidents occurred on Sunday, March 1 on a stretch of I-80 in Wyoming. The first occurred near mile marker 181, and the second near mile marker 184 around Creston Junction. Over 100 vehicles were involved, and 30 people were taken to the emergency room. Many large tractor-trailers were involved in the accidents. A representative from the Sweetwater County Sheriff's Office said it was one of the largest crashes he’s ever seen.

What Caused the Accident?

Authorities are still investigating, but they suspect that weather was a factor. Wet snow, wind, and cooling conditions created a very icy, dangerous road. This stretch of I-80 is no stranger to dangerous weather and traffic accidents. In the 152 days prior to the accident, I-80 had been closed for 54 of them.

With several cars and tractor-trailers involved, it will take some time to discover what caused these accidents in the first place. The attorneys at Metier Law Firm say that no matter how bad the weather is, truck drivers have a responsibility to practice safe driving standards to prevent crashes.

“We are saddened to hear about the recent large crashes on Interstate 80 in Wyoming earlier this month. As a trucking accident law firm with multiple offices in Wyoming, we are intimately familiar with this dangerous stretch of road. Commercial Motor Vehicle owners, drivers, dispatchers, and brokers all have technology at their hands to help drivers be aware of dangerous road conditions ahead. Drivers who fail to keep a proper lookout, keep a safe stopping distance, drive too fast for conditions, fail to check on road conditions ahead of time, fail to uphold CDL requirements and Federal Motor Carrier Standards should be held accountable.”
