California Attorney Explains What to Do After a Fender Bender

Rob Rosenthal:

If the auto accident you're in seems minor, do you still need an attorney? We ask California attorney Joel Siegal for this AskTheLawyers™ Quick Question.

Joel Siegal:

Sometimes people call me up on a very simple rear-ender and they tell me, for example, that their medical bills are very minor; they've gone to a chiropractor two or three times. In cases like that I often tell the clients that they should think about trying to resolve the case themselves and not have to pay a lawyer or even take the case to small claims court. Sometimes that's possible, but generally, if the injuries are a little bit more significant, insurance companies fight like hell. Let's remember the insurance company manifesto; their manifesto is to get premiums from their clients and not pay it to accident victims. Our manifesto, on the other hand, is to get the insurance companies to pay what they have to pay for these accidents.
