Brain injuries are often called “invisible injuries.” People who have them may not know they have them, and they are commonly missed by emergency room physicians. If a car accident causes a brain injury, the victim may not realize it until weeks later.

Brain injuries are not always apparent at first.

In fact, brain injuries are assumed to go unrecognized more often than not at the scene of the accident. Statistics show that 60% of emergency room physicians miss the diagnosis of a brain injury when a patient is brought to them. This is why it’s important to keep an eye out for any symptoms which might indicate that a brain injury occurred, and return to your doctor if there is any suspicion of further injury.

Due to the fact that the initial symptoms of a brain injury may not show for some time after sustaining the injury, it may be easy to overlook. Changes in a person’s life or personality is one symptom that often leads victims and their families to suspect that a brain injury may have occurred and been overlooked.

Family members of a head injury victim may be the first to realize that a brain injury occurred.

Family and close friends are often the first to notice when a person who may have sustained a brain injury begins to behave differently. Brain injuries can result in changes in mood, behavior, and even personality. These injuries can often lead injury victims to become unreasonably angry at stimuli that would not have bothered them before.

If these symptoms arise after a situation in which that person might have sustained a head injury, it’s important to seek medical care for that person immediately. Due to the subtle nature of these symptoms as opposed to more obvious symptoms such as bleeding, severe headaches, or loss of consciousness, it is not uncommon for time to pass between sustaining the injury and recognizing it.

Recovering from a brain injury can be challenging; a brain injury attorney can help.

Adjusting to life after a brain injury can be challenging, and it helps to know that someone is on your side who has seen your situation play out successfully time and time again. Brain injury attorneys have a great deal of experience with these situations and will not only be able to help seek compensation for a brain injury victim’s medical bills, lost wages, and more, but may have other resources to offer as well. These attorneys generally offer free consultations and even work on a contingency fee basis, which means clients don’t pay unless their attorneys recover money for them. With this in mind, don’t wait to seek care and reach out to a brain injury attorney if you suspect you or a loved one have sustained a brain injury.

Rob Rosenthal:

Are brain injuries always easy to spot after a car accident? We asked Colorado attorney Tom Metier in this AskTheLawyers.com Quick Question.

Tom Metier:

Brain injuries are not always apparent immediately after a car accident. In fact, there are probably more brain injuries that occur that are not recognized than are recognized at the scene of the accident, and statistics show that 60% of ER physicians miss the diagnosis in the emergency room. A person doesn't know whether they've been knocked unconscious or not, and oftentimes the initial sequelae of a brain injury are invisible. So we don't have a way of knowing until there's an extensive examination or a person starts to live their life and realizes something's wrong.
